X3D with B850 vs X870: Is There a Significant Difference for Gaming Performance?
Calling all-knowing Xiaohongshu to the rescue! I’m suddenly itching to upgrade from my trusty 9700X to the powerhouse 9800X3D, and guess what? My motherboard has already arrived on my doorstep. But here’s the question burning in my mind: will using the B850 motherboard hinder me from unleashing the full potential of the 9800X3D?

While we’re at it, I’m also planning a graphics card overhaul—perhaps stepping up to a 5080 (or even considering the rumored 5080s/5080ti that might hit the market in the future). With these upgrades in mind, would a 1000W power supply be enough to keep everything running smoothly and efficiently?

For reference, here’s what I’m working with:
– Motherboard: TUF B850-PLUS WIFI
– Power Supply: TUF 1000W Gold
What do you think?
I’m in the same boat, thinking about upgrading to the 9800X3D but still rocking an older motherboard. From what I’ve read, the X870 might offer better support for those extra cores, but if you’re mostly gaming, the B850 could still keep up. And yeah, totally agree about the GPU upgrade too—5080 sounds like the way to go!
I feel you on that upgrade itch! The B850 should work fine since the 9800X3D is backward compatible, but the X870 might offer better future-proofing if you’re planning a full system overhaul, especially with that new GPU coming. Just make sure your power supply can handle a 5080 if you go that route!
I was in the same boat trying to decide between B850 and X870 for my 9800X3D build. From what I’ve learned, the X870 might offer better VRM cooling and stability, but if you’re mostly gaming, the B850 could still deliver great performance. Can’t wait to hear your real-world gaming benchmarks! And yeah, upgrading that GPU sounds like a no-brainer.
Absolutely agree! The X870’s superior VRM cooling can be a game-changer under heavy loads, but for pure gaming on a 9800X3D, the B850 is plenty capable. Real-world benchmarks will paint a clearer picture, and I’m excited to see those too! Upgrading the GPU is always a smart move—enjoy the upgrade journey!
Interesting read! I was also debating between B850 and X870 for my 9800X3D build. From what I’ve seen in benchmarks, the performance gap seems minimal for gaming—maybe 1-3% at most. Unless you’re chasing every last frame, the B850 should handle it just fine.
