Said goodbye to my flat-bar road bike and welcomed a new drop-bar road bike into my life. After much deliberation, I chose the entry-level Allez Sport from Specialized.

There are plenty of reasons why it’s a great choice—and just one reason why it might not be: budget constraints.

Recently, with more time spent playing basketball, my knees have started protesting against high-intensity stop-and-go movements. So, I decided it was time to switch gears and get myself a bicycle instead.

With a modest budget in mind, many posts on platforms like Xiaohongshu recommended Giant bikes. However, visiting their physical store was a less-than-ideal experience. Their staff seemed indifferent, as if buying a bike was a favor rather than a transaction. On the flip side, when I visited Specialized’s store, the service was notably better—professional without being pushy. It made all the difference.

Before heading to the Specialized store, I noticed that the cheapest Allez model on Tmall was priced at 9,990 yuan, but the store didn’t have it in stock. Instead, they offered me an even more affordable option—the Allez Sport, ready to go right away.

It’s been almost three weeks since I brought my new companion home. Only afterward did I dive deep into videos and tutorials, gradually understanding terms specific to cycling. This process reminded me of when I first got into photography. Back then, I had no idea what set an entry-level DSLR apart from a flagship model costing ten times as much.

My first camera was a Nikon D90, and over the years, I learned about medium format versus full-frame cameras. Eventually, after a decade, I ended up with an A7R4a. The same principle applies here: you don’t need to know everything upfront, but the journey is always exciting.

For beginners looking to join the world of Specialized bikes, the brand offers several series, which can initially seem overwhelming. Among them are the Allez, Tarmac, Aethos, and Diverge. Think of these as different models in BMW’s lineup, such as the 3 Series or 5 Series. S-Works versions are akin to BMW’s M Series—high-performance editions. For example, if the standard Tarmac SL7 corresponds to the 5 Series, the S-Works Tarmac SL7 would be the equivalent of the M5.

I’ve participated in three small group rides so far, and I feel the Allez Sport serves its purpose perfectly for someone starting out in road cycling. I’m not a professional cyclist, so attempting sharp turns at 40 km/h feels unnecessarily risky. Cruising steadily at 30 km/h already gives me a good workout and makes me sweat.

Before purchasing, I scoured countless notes online asking whether Specialized was worth it for beginners. Many suggested avoiding the Allez due to its perceived lack of value for money. But if you ask me, I’d still recommend it. After all, isn’t the point to enjoy the shopping experience, own a stylish frame, and participate in community events?

As for components like drivetrains, wheels, aluminum versus carbon frames—all those details matter less when you’re young and your legs are your real engine. We’re not racing athletes chasing every second; we’re here to stay fit and healthy. Of course, if your budget allows, go for the best—you won’t regret it.

One last fun fact: “Allez” is French for “Let’s go!” or “Go for it!”
