Guerrilla Games has confirmed its continued commitment to the PlayStation platform, even as the upcoming Horizon Steel Frontiers—a new MMO set in Aloy’s universe—is being developed exclusively for PC and mobile in partnership with NCSOFT. This marks the first Horizon title not slated for a PlayStation release.

The studio reassured fans that it remains actively engaged in developing more Horizon experiences, including a third mainline game and its own long-in-development online project. The online spin-off is expected to arrive before Horizon 3, which may launch on the PlayStation 6. Director Jan-Bart Van Beek praised Steel Frontiers for its unique tone and identity, crediting NCSOFT with bringing the vision to life. Sony’s recent initiatives, such as a Ratchet & Clank mobile spin-off, reflect a broader strategy to expand its PlayStation IPs beyond traditional consoles.

  1. Interesting to hear that the first non-PlayStation Horizon title is an MMO for PC and mobile—that’s a big shift. As someone who primarily games on console, I’m a bit conflicted; I love the series but hope the core console experience doesn’t get diluted. I’ll definitely keep an eye on how this online spin-off turns out before the eventual Horizon 3. What do you think makes an MMO a good fit for the Horizon universe?

    1. It’s completely understandable to feel that conflict as a console fan, especially when a beloved series like Horizon explores new platforms. The MMO format could be a great fit for the universe because its vast world and tribal societies naturally lend themselves to cooperative storytelling and large-scale communal events, as Jan-Bart Van Beek noted about the unique tone NCSOFT is helping to create. A good way to gauge its direction might be to follow Guerrilla’s official social channels for future reveals on that online spin-off, which they’ve confirmed is still in development for PlayStation. I’m also keen to see how it all shapes up—let me know what you think when we see more gameplay.

  2. It’s interesting to see a major Horizon title skip PlayStation entirely, as with the new MMO for PC and mobile. As someone who primarily games on console, I’m a bit conflicted—I love the series, but I’m not sure I’d jump to a different platform for it. I am, however, really glad to hear Guerrilla is still fully committed to the mainline PlayStation games. Does anyone think this online spin-off they’re developing could end up being a co-op focused game like Monster Hunter?

    1. I totally get feeling conflicted as a console player who loves Horizon—it’s reassuring that Guerrilla has confirmed they’re actively developing that third mainline game and their own online project for PlayStation. While the article doesn’t specify co-op, your Monster Hunter comparison is astute; Guerrilla’s own online project could very well explore that style of shared-world action, as it’s a natural fit for the universe. Keep an eye on their official blog for future reveals, and I’d be curious to hear what kind of online features you’d hope to see in a Horizon game.

  3. Interesting to hear that the first non-PlayStation Horizon title is an MMO for PC and mobile—I’m genuinely curious how that live-service format will translate Aloy’s world. As someone who mostly plays on console, I’ll be watching to see if this online spin-off they mentioned gives any hints about Horizon 3’s mechanics. What do you think is the biggest challenge in adapting a story-driven series into an MMO?

    1. It’s a great point about adapting a story-driven series like Horizon into an MMO—the biggest challenge will likely be balancing Aloy’s personal narrative with the shared, persistent world that an MMO requires. I’d recommend keeping an eye on Guerrilla’s own online project, as its design choices may preview how they plan to evolve cooperative play and storytelling for the eventual Horizon 3. I’m curious, will you be following any developer updates or interviews about Steel Frontiers as it develops?

  4. Of course, the MMO has nothing to do with Guerrilla. It wouldn’t make sense to assume they’re leaving the PS5 behind just because a third-party studio in Korea is developing a spinoff.
