  1. Most e-readers provide similar reading quality on e-ink screens, so the main differences are in their physical design. I’d recommend choosing one with a USB-C charging port to avoid carrying extra cables.

  2. Just a word of caution: if you want speed similar to your phone, you will likely be disappointed with e-ink. The technology will probably never be as fast as an LCD screen. Have you visited any stores with e-readers like the Kindle or Pocketbook on display? That way, you can check the page turn speed and how e-ink refreshes. If you still want one after that, I recommend the Pocketbook Verse Pro or the Era if the larger model fits your budget.

    1. I’m not giving up on my phone entirely, but I plan to use an e-reader for reading in bed and during spa days where phones aren’t allowed. Could you explain why you recommend these specific models?

      1. PocketBook devices are not tied to a specific ecosystem and, since they don’t run Android, they help minimize distractions. You can install KOReader without needing to jailbreak them—Kobo devices also allow this. PocketBook recently partnered with OverDrive to integrate Libby library borrowing directly into their systems. While they’re designed with the European market in mind, they should work well in the UK too, though I’m not entirely certain.

The PocketBook Verse is one of the few 6-inch ereaders with physical page-turn buttons and offers a very comfortable design. The Verse Pro and Era models also include text-to-speech functionality. I own an HD 3, which is quite similar to the Verse Pro but an older version, and I’m very happy with it. I also have the larger Inkpad Color 3, which is a great option if you’re looking for a color e-reader in a bigger size.

If you have any specific questions about PocketBook readers, I’d be glad to help. I also own several Kobo devices, a Boox Palma 2, and other small Android e-ink tablets, so I can answer questions about those as well.

        1. I’m also considering the Verse Pro and Era for their text-to-speech features. My challenge is finding a device with a Carta 1300 HD screen and page turn buttons that also includes TTS. It seems like an impossible combination. For now, my decade-old Paperwhite and five-year-old Libra H2O still work, though the Libra’s battery life is declining.

          1. The Boox Go 7 BW features a Carta 1300 screen and page turn buttons. It runs on Android, so some apps likely offer text-to-speech, though I can’t confirm since I don’t use that feature.

To my knowledge, there are no non-Android devices with both a Carta 1300 BW screen and page turn buttons. If such a device existed, I’d be interested in replacing my 8-year-old Oasis with it.
