Thank you for the recommendations. I appreciate your help.
The buyer’s guide lists three good tabletop telescopes, which come with a built-in stand. The Sky-Watcher Heritage 130 ($269) is similar to the OneSky but costs a bit less and includes free shipping. Sky-Watcher also offers a used model for $239. These are often recommended for beginners, and even as an experienced observer, I enjoy my slightly larger 150mm version.
Dobsonians like these may not look like traditional telescopes, but they are popular and offer great value with larger aperture per dollar. The base is included, and you just need to place it on a sturdy table.
To view comfortably while seated, you’ll need to raise the telescope on a stool, table, or even a storage container, along with a chair or stool. I built my own table, which isn’t difficult to do.
The buyer’s guide prices were inaccurate. Models listed in the $250-350 range actually cost $400 and up. The one you linked is $383, not $269.
That’s odd. When I click the link, it shows $265.
Would this be a good option? I spent the afternoon researching tabletops and now I’m feeling overwhelmed.
I also recommended the 130mm version, but the 150mm has a larger mirror, which makes faint celestial objects brighter and provides more detail. It is slightly heavier and larger, but if the higher price fits your budget, you’ll get a better telescope.
Thank you for the help. I hadn’t realized how much there is to learn about telescopes.
I found it overwhelming. As someone with ADHD, I experience paralysis when things are over-explained, which causes my brain to shut down.
I’ve owned the 70mm travel scope. The tripod is poor, the aperture is small, and the accessories are low quality. You’d need to replace the diagonal, eyepieces, and tripod—basically everything—to end up with a mediocre telescope.
Regarding the Amazon scope (B0DSPKQ4J3), the tripod doesn’t look great, but it’s unlikely to be worse than the travel scope’s. It comes with rings and a Vixen dovetail, so it will fit any future mount you purchase. You’ll still want to upgrade the diagonal and get some Plossl or better eyepieces.
