Nach einer kürzlichen neuntägigen Reise von den Vereinigten Staaten nach Auckland kehrten mein Partner und ich mit einem flexiblen, ausgewogenen Reiseplan zurück, der unbedingte Sehenswürdigkeiten mit spontaner Erkundung verband. Unsere Vorgehensweise war ideal für Reisende, die eine Mischung aus geplanten Aktivitäten und Freizeit bevorzugen, ohne den Druck eines strengen Zeitplans. Wir begannen damit, Flüge von Salt Lake City nach Auckland über San Francisco zu buchen, unsere Unterkunft in Auckland zu reservieren und einen Rundgang durch Hobbiton zu buchen – einer unserer wenigen unverzichtbaren Stopps. Danach füllten wir unsere Tage basierend auf der Nähe, lokalen Empfehlungen und persönlichen Interessen, wodurch sowohl Fotomöglichkeiten als auch Entspannung gewährleistet wurden.
Unsere Reise beinhaltete eine landschaftliche Fahrt nach Hobbiton und Hamilton Gardens, ruhige Tage an Lucas Falls und Mairangi Bay sowie Highlights wie Piha Beach und Kitekite Falls. Wir genossen den Zoo in Auckland und das Einkaufserlebnis in Ponsonby, tauchten im Matheson Bay schwimmen, nachdem sich die Wetterbedingungen unseren ursprünglichen Plan für Goat Island verändert hatten, und machten uns auf nach Rotorua für das Waiotapu Geothermal Wonderland und die Redwoods. Ein Besuch der Spellbound Glow Worm Cave und ein letzter Tag in Mount Eden und dem Auckland Museum vervollständigten die Reise. Die natürliche Schönheit Neuseelands und die freundlichen Einwohner hinterließen einen bleibenden Eindruck. Wenn ich erneut reise, könnte ich möglicherweise unsere Zeit in Rotorua verlängern oder weiter nördlich erkunden, doch insgesamt bot die Reise ein lohnendes Gleichgewicht aus Abenteuer und Ruhe – genau das, was wir uns erhofft hatten.
It looks like you had an amazing trip! Were you staying in the Albany area, since you mentioned Lucas Falls? I’m curious why you chose to stay there.
My partner and I booked a hotel and flight package to save money, and we chose it based on the ratings. Since our plans included areas to the north, west, and south, the location felt central. Although staying closer to the town center might have been more convenient for our itinerary, we appreciated the suburban atmosphere, as it reminded us of home.

New Zealand’s North Island has so much to explore, and I’m already planning my return—especially to see the South Island’s dark sky areas for astrophotography. Every day was filled with wonder and a unique, indescribable charm.
Hobbiton was beautifully crafted and impressive, though a bit too structured for my taste. I understand the need for organization, but I would have appreciated a little more freedom to wander. The tour with included meals was a great choice, as it offered a chance to connect with fellow travelers and hear their stories.
