If you’re concerned about the Intel overvoltage issue, consider the 8940HX. It’s much faster than your current setup, and no AMD CPUs are affected by this problem. Even the newer 13th and 14th gen Intel processors are thought to be safe.
I’m not sure what the latest processor is, but I currently have the i9-14900HX.
The latest Intel processors are the Arrow Lake series, such as the 275HX and 285H. Even the 14900HX found in new laptops should not be affected by the degradation issue you’re concerned about.
You should write those pages.
Could you help me find something similar from MSI?
Consider your budget, and keep in mind that MSI uses inexpensive plastic materials.
You may have already selected this model: the MSI Vector 16-inch QHD 240Hz Gaming Laptop with an AMD Ryzen 9 8940HX, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, 16GB DDR5, and 1TB SSD, currently priced at $1300.
That’s the one I found. I wasn’t sure if I missed something, because getting a $600 laptop for my son would be amazing. MSI has been reliable for me, and he’s already comfortable with the keyboard layout from using my old one. My previous MSI from 2019/2020 still performs better than my 2025 Lenovo.
If I were you, I would buy the $600 gaming laptop and use the remaining $600 for either an iPad or gaming accessories such as an IETS cooling pad, ergonomic chair, mouse, keyboard, gaming headset, or a good tablet for gaming on the go.
What do you mean by “slowly been dying”?
I’ve been experiencing a growing number of errors that are becoming more frequent and varied. These include random blue screens, programs refusing to open, DirectX failing to install, random crashes to desktop, and Chrome pages constantly crashing.
Even reinstalling Windows resulted in blue screens or getting stuck during installation, requiring hard restarts.
What began as occasional issues has progressively worsened to the point where the computer is nearly unusable. Searching the error codes consistently points to processor-related problems on Reddit, Microsoft forums, and other tech sites.
I believe the processor is failing over time, as what started as minor nuisances has escalated into widespread instability that prevents normal use.
The Asus ROG Strix with the 8940hx is a solid but aggressive CPU, particularly when boosting. While I can often play with boost disabled, some games require it, which increases temperatures. Undervolting and power limiting helped me find a good balance between performance and thermals.
Does the BIOS not allow you to use discrete graphics to run your graphics card?
Yes, but the CPU is still working hard. It has a low base clock but a high boost, and it also has many threads.
If you set the game to use the High Performance Discrete GPU option, does that resolve the issue?
