Sony has been saying this for over a year. The previous two generations lasted seven years, so I don’t understand why people are so upset about it.
As we saw with the PS4, the launch of the PS6 will not mark the end of the PS5’s lifecycle.
This has been the pattern since the PlayStation 1. The PS1 launched in 1994, the PS2 in 2000, the PS3 in 2006, the PS4 in 2013, and the PS5 in 2020.
The last PS1 game in the US was released in 2004, in Europe in 2005, and in Japan in 2006—roughly 10–12 years of support. The last PS2 game came out in 2013, giving it a 13-year lifespan. For the PS3, the final digital game was released in 2020, and the last physical in 2022, so support lasted 14 to 16 years depending on how you count.
The PS4 is currently at 11 years, so it’s not surprising to see it still supported, especially since console architecture is now more similar across generations. This makes it easier for developers to continue releasing games for older systems.
Given this history, PS5 games will likely continue well into the PS6 era. There’s no need to delay the PS6—the PS5 doesn’t require more than a typical 7-year cycle, and it will likely receive support for at least 10 years, especially if the PS6 maintains similar architecture for effective backward compatibility.
The PS4 isn’t the only example. When I worked in electronics retail years ago, people were still purchasing PS2s as late as 2010 or 2011.
There’s always an overlap between console generations, and both statements can be true. The PS5 is in the middle of its lifecycle, and the PS6 is expected in 2027.
Sony typically supports consoles for at least 10 years, as seen with all but the Vita, while new consoles release every 6–7 years. The PS5 launched in 2020 and will be supported until at least 2030, making 2025 the midpoint of its lifecycle. The PS6 will likely be supported until around 2037, with its own midpoint in 2032, and the PS7 could follow in 2034.
This pattern allows us to estimate release dates, support timelines, and lifecycle midpoints for current and future PlayStation consoles, barring any major changes.
This sub often seems to be behind other PlayStation communities when it comes to sharing news.
This sub can be a bit slow with news at times, which is understandable.
Perfect. I probably won’t be buying a PS6 until 2030.
