It depends on how long you want to wait. If you have a GPU better than a 3060, just wait and enjoy games you haven’t played yet—it should last you at least three years. If you don’t have a gaming platform, then yes, get something like a PS5 for a good price.
My gaming laptop has a 3060 with 6 GB of VRAM, but every game runs on low settings with lag.
RAM prices are unlikely to improve and will likely remain this way until at least the end of 2026.
What should I build with that budget instead?
Have you considered looking for a decent second-hand PC?
I don’t trust secondhand products because of their previous usage.
What are your requirements—gaming or productivity?
For your RTX 5060 Ti and Ryzen 9600 X, 16 GB of RAM is a good starting point. You can always upgrade later if needed.
I’m tired of this pattern. There’s always some reason for high prices—crypto miners, scalpers, AI data centers, global supply chain issues, or the pandemic. By the time RAM and GPU prices drop, something else will come up, like a critical minerals shortage driving up processor and motherboard costs. Then Microsoft might introduce a requirement like a mandatory NPU for Windows 12, making it an industry standard in software and games.
I think we have to compromise by buying last-generation parts on discount and slowly assembling our PCs. The downside is that warranties may lapse or defects might not be detected in time.
You sound like you’re from the future! I hope it doesn’t get that bad.
