Take a breath.
They are still doing a better job than the people who replaced Tantalus.
That’s great, and you’re one of the fortunate ones. But hopefully you can understand the frustration of people who spent $45 or more on the new DLC and can’t even enjoy it because the game keeps crashing.
QA is responsible for discovering and reporting bugs, not fixing them. The decisions regarding technical debt in production are not made by the QA team.
After switching versions, I can no longer level up my hive mind council. Clicking to level up just takes me to the council page without allowing an upgrade. Restarting the game doesn’t fix it, and since I’m on Ironman mode, I can’t simply restart the save.
We’ve confirmed a fix for this issue in the upcoming PS5 patch, which is expected to release early next week. If you still encounter the problem after the update, please let me know.
Could you please specify which console you’re playing on?
Paradox has improved significantly and now maintains much higher standards than the developer who took over for Overlord and initially ruined it, until Tantalus returned a year later. This release has far fewer bugs than previous versions.
However, some people are being unreasonably hostile toward the OP. The game is excellent—we enjoy it enough to overlook the regular crashes. Should a game crash this often? No. Will it be fixed? Yes.
Coding is complex; even a small oversight or incorrect input can lead to numerous unintended and difficult-to-trace issues.
A single automated QA test covering all possible variants in a game as large as Stellaris could take months. For example, it might only reveal a crash when playing as a specific race with a certain number of planets and expanding to three more.
There are too many variables for a simple analysis.
Every game release, especially those with multiplayer features, comes with bugs. It’s unrealistic to expect every single bug to be found during testing unless the game is very small. When tens of thousands of people play, issues will arise that weren’t apparent or couldn’t be addressed during initial testing.
It’s understandable to encounter niche or late-game bugs, but when a game crashes every 5-10 minutes from the very start, it becomes nearly unplayable and unacceptable. Such issues could have been easily identified during testing.
Excusing this as just being a new game is part of why many developers now feel comfortable releasing broken products. You wouldn’t buy a laptop that doesn’t work, wait weeks for it to be fixed, and consider that normal or acceptable. Similarly, a widespread problem shouldn’t be dismissed simply because the product is new.
Agreed. Unfortunately, it’s become normalized for companies to release games without proper playtesting, then spend months or even a year fixing issues that shouldn’t have been in the release build. If you express frustration about paying for a buggy, untested product, you’re often dismissed by the community as a raging complainer.
Based on my experience with max tech cost and difficulty set to 1000, alongside 30 AI empires on Grand Admiral, I’ve encountered no lag or crashes. The game runs smoothly with massive 400k fleets present everywhere, except for slight delays in the galactic council menu. Since habitats haven’t been researched by the late mid-game in this setup, they appear to be the likely cause of performance issues. Without them, the update performs excellently so far.
I’m not sure what console you’re using, but I need it. My current game has maxed empires: 30 empires, 5 fallen empires, and 3 marauders. I can’t get past the first 100 years without constant crashes every 10 minutes. I’m currently in year 2270. The lag is annoying, but the main issue is not being able to play due to the crashes. Everyone suggests turning off auto-save, but I can’t because I’m on Ironman mode and don’t want to lose this game.
I have auto-save on with no issues on my base PS5, but I did free up 100 GB of storage space. I believe the game recommends having at least 50 GB free, so keeping around 55 GB available for saves and other data might help if you’re running low on storage. Otherwise, I haven’t had any problems until habitats.
I currently have about 100 fleets of 400k power, all corvettes, attacking me around the year 3580. The only lag I experience is during the galactic council voting menu.
