Meteors appear unpredictably across the sky, though for the Perseids, they radiate away from the constellation Perseus. Each meteor lasts only a fraction of a second, making it impossible to aim binoculars or a telescope in time.
To watch, simply set up a blanket or reclining chair and look toward the northeast or overhead in the evening. If you can locate Perseus using an app like SkySafari or Stellarium, keep your gaze in that general direction. Avoid looking at your phone or other bright lights to preserve your night vision, which helps you spot even faint meteors.
Dark skies are ideal, as light pollution or a bright moon can reduce visibility. This year, the moon will be out for much of the night, so fewer meteors may be visible, but you should still see a fair number per hour.
For the best experience, find a location with darker skies and an open field. No telescope or magnification is necessary—simply be patient, and the wonders of the night sky will gradually unfold before you.
