Both the American Pro II and Player II are excellent choices to begin with.
I own both a Player and an American Pro II. The Player is a good guitar, but the American Pro II is a great one.
I wasn’t satisfied with the pickups on my Player, so I installed a pair of P90s and replaced the Pau Ferro neck with a Maple one. Now it’s a fantastic instrument.
If I were you, I’d go with the Pro II. The necks are stellar, and I really like the included S-switch, which is essentially a stock Gilmour mod.
Most Strats come with high action from the factory, so you’ll need to set up either model.
To decide, compare the specs and see if the American Pro offers features you want that the Player doesn’t. Also consider whether you’d be willing to pay extra to upgrade the Player with those features later.
If you can afford it, go for the American Pro II. The new American Pro Classic models are nearly as good as the Pro II and slightly cheaper if you’re buying new.
I recently faced the same decision with a Telecaster and chose the Player II. The neck feels incredible, and while the American Pro II sounds slightly better, the difference is only noticeable when comparing them side by side. I’m very happy with my choice.
If you’re having it shipped, consider trying Sweetwater. I called them with a lower price offer from Reverb, and they matched it. Their customer service is much better than Guitar Center’s. I used the savings to get a hard shell case, which is a good idea since the Player II doesn’t come with a case or gig bag. Give them a call to see if they’ll offer a lower price on the color you want.
