Nintendo Switch 2 Backward Compatibility: Full Details & Game Support Confirmed
The recently unveiled Switch 2 trailer brought exciting news: Nintendo confirmed the next-gen console will feature backward compatibility, letting players enjoy their existing Switch game library. However, the company wisely cautioned that compatibility might vary across different titles.

At the April 2nd launch event, Nintendo dropped more details through its official channels. Nearly all first-party titles will run seamlessly on Switch 2, while about 20% of the 15,000+ third-party games will receive special optimizations. The vast majority of remaining titles will still perform well. Currently, only *Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 4: VR Kit* won’t be supported due to the new console’s dimensions being incompatible with its cardboard peripherals.

Here’s the real game-changer: even without dedicated enhancements, your favorite Switch games will get a noticeable performance boost on Switch 2. Expect quicker load times, buttery-smooth frame rates, and crisper visuals – though the exact improvements will vary by title.

When it comes to accessories, most original Switch peripherals will still work with the new console under certain conditions. The exceptions? The dock, charging stand, AC adapter, bundled HDMI cable, and microSD cards – these will need to be Switch 2 compatible.
This is great news! I was worried about rebuying my whole Switch library, so hearing most first-party games will work is a relief. Kinda bummed only 20% of third-party titles get optimizations though – hope my favorites make the cut!
This is great news! I was really hoping my Switch game collection wouldn’t become obsolete. The 20% optimization for third-party games seems a bit low though – hope my favorites make the cut. Can’t wait to see how older games perform on the new hardware!
