In 2025, Breitling unveiled the new Top Time Racing chronograph, a masterpiece powered by the renowned B01 movement. This timepiece boasts a distinctive cushion-shaped case and a striking “dashboard” pattern at the center of its dial, drawing inspiration from classic car dashboards of yesteryears.

Interestingly, this watch is a reimagined version of the Datora Racing model that Breitling originally launched in 1969. During the vibrant 1960s and 1970s, when racing culture was sweeping the globe, rally and road races were capturing everyone’s imagination.

Breitling astutely tapped into this trend with the introduction of the Datora Racing watch. Its advertisements frequently showcased high-octane race scenes and speed contests, firmly establishing the watch as a symbol of motorsport excellence. This design not only resonated with racers and enthusiasts but also became an emblematic icon of the era’s racing spirit.

The standout feature of this watch is its unique Racing Dial design. The dial’s centerpiece is a checkerboard-inspired pattern, complemented by bold red and orange chronograph hands that exude pure racing flair. This aesthetic is not just visually captivating but also highly distinctive, setting it apart in a crowded field. Moreover, the date window positioned at 6 o’clock adds a practical touch to its appeal.

The case, crafted from polished stainless steel, takes on a barrel or cushion shape measuring 38 millimeters. The dial also features a tachymeter scale along its outer edge, powered by the Valjoux 7734 hand-wound mechanical movement.

However, the rise of quartz watches in the early 1970s, coupled with shifting market demands and brand strategies, led to the discontinuation of this beloved Datora Racing chronograph after only a few years in production.
Fast forward to 2025, and Breitling has made a triumphant return to the exhilarating world of racing watches. Reviving the iconic Datora Racing, now renamed the Top Time Racing, the watch now showcases a more refined cushion-shaped case, an array of vintage-inspired dial colors, and is equipped with the COSC-certified B01 automatic chronograph movement, boasting a robust 70-hour power reserve.
