Suunto VO2 Max Run Misclassification Issue

Many Suunto users are encountering a perplexing issue with the platform’s activity classification system. During a recent easy run, heart rate and pace remained consistently within the blue zone—clearly indicating Zone 1–2 effort—as accurately reflected in the Zone Sense data. However, the Suunto app subsequently classified this workout as a VO₂ Max run, a categorization that contradicts the actual training intensity.

This misclassification appears to be affecting the Suunto Coach functionality, resulting in inaccurate training load calculations and inappropriate feedback suggesting excessive training intensity. The discrepancy between the accurate Zone Sense data and the app’s misinterpretation undermines confidence in the platform’s coaching features, which are central to the device’s value proposition for many athletes. The inconsistency raises questions about the classification algorithm’s reliability despite apparently correct underlying physiological data.
